Vijayawada, August 01, 2023: Andhra Pradesh’s transport department has decided to stop printing driving licences and vehicle registration certificate and to go digital, in an effort to make the processes more people-friendly.
As part of Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s paperless initiative, the department will replace these documents with their digital versions. The application fee (Rs 200) and postal charges (Rs 35) for the cards have also been done away with. The digital cards will be available on DigiLocker or M-Parivahan. Those who do not use mobile phones can print the digital cards and keep them.
Transport Commissioner M K Sinha said the charges were “discontinued at the closing hours on Friday”. “The new digital cards are being issued free of cost,’’ he said. “It is enough to keep the cards available on the mobile phone under the DigiLocker system.”
People who have already paid the fees will, however, receive the physical cards by post.
Last December, the government provided nearly five lakh tablets to Class 8 students and teachers. The devices are preloaded with Byju’s content for digital learning.
“Some sections of society are not eager to adapt to a changing generation, but this government firmly believes we are just at the beginning of the digital revolution. We aim to enhance the education system through a holistic approach with government initiatives,” the chief minister had said at the distribution programme according to the reports published in indianexpress.com.
This academic year, school teaching was digitised through 30,213 interactive flat panels (IFP) in high schools and 10,038 smart TVs in primary schools. By December, nearly 50,000 schools will have IFPs and TVs, the government said, adding that over 4,000 digital libraries with computers and internet facilities would also be set up across the state.
