Jr NTR said NT Rama Rao’s fame cannot be erased as the Andhra Pradesh government decided to rename a university after Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s father, YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
New Delhi, September 23,2022: The YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government in Andhra Pradesh passed a Bill, amid protests, to rename the NTR University of Health Sciences (UHS) as YSR UHS. The university was established in 1986 by TDP founder and former chief minister NT Rama Rao.
The government has renamed the varsity after YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s late father, with the chief minister claiming that his father, an MBBS doctor, was the one who initiated health related schemes and established three new medical colleges in the state as chief minister between 2004 and 2009. According to the reports published in indiatoday.in
“Should credit not be given to the person who deserves it?” Jagan Mohan Reddy asked.
Reacting to this, NTS’s grandson, Jr NTR said, “Both NTR and YSR are very popular leaders. This kind of honor brought by taking one’s name and naming one’s name does not raise the level of YSR, it does not lower the level of NTR.”
“By renaming the university, the fame NTR earned, his stature in the history of the Telugu nation and his memory in the hearts of the Telugu people cannot be erased,” he said in a tweet. However, Jagan Mohan Reddy has clarified that the Bill was intended not to belittle NTR.
He said that it was as an acknowledgement of what his father had done for public health through schemes such as Aarogyasri and ‘104’ and ‘108’ ambulance services and was not intended to belittle NTR.
