Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Ayyanna Patrudu highlights India’s democratic strength at Commonwealth conference in Barbados

The Constitution has laid the foundation for a strong and accountable democratic structure, wherein no institution is above it and people are the real masters, says Ayyanna Patrudu

New Delhi, October 10, 2025: Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu has underscored India’s enduring democratic spirit and institutional resilience during his address at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), held in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Extending greetings in both Telugu and English, he recalled the historic ties between India and Barbados, noting that India had gifted the Speaker’s Chair to Barbados upon its Independence in 1966 — symbolising the collective will of the people. “When a directly elected House functions under the Speaker’s guidance, democratic institutions naturally work in harmony,” he observed.

Reflecting on India’s 75 years as a Republic, the Speaker said that the Indian Constitution, framed in the name of “We, the People,” had laid the foundation for a strong and accountable democratic structure. Highlighting India’s electoral progress — from 17 crore voters in 1951 to 97 crore in 2024 — he said the peaceful change of governments through 18 general elections demonstrated the maturity of India’s democracy according to the reports published in thehindu.com.

He stressed that no institution in India was above the Constitution, asserting that “the people are the real masters.”

Recalling legendary Telugu leader N.T. Rama Rao’s quote, “Society is the temple and people are Gods,” he said it encapsulated the essence of people-centric democracy.
